I haven't been running much lately, but the few miles I have put in have been simply delightful with my new shoes. Here's a quick snapshot of just how flexible they really are.
This picture may imply that they're only really flexible in that one area, but really they're like that everywhere. I just didn't feel like manhandling them for too long while I struggled to take a decent picture.
I've also started running in them sock-less. Initially, I was resistant to this due to the ew factor. It only took trying them on without socks to not care anymore. Plus, I never seem to have clean running socks anyway, so problem solved.
In other I haven't been running news, the 5 or so pounds I gained while I was doing my most intensive marathon training have suddenly disappeared since I've gone semi-lazy. I'm considering starting a weight loss program involving eating massive amounts of fat (I entered a couple days of eating in an online food diary analyzer thing and whoa, oh whoa, do I apparently like myself some fat) and laying around.

I have seen my brother do that with his too, it's amazing how flexible they are! I'm glad you are liking the new kicks!
What is it about sockless running that had you converted the first time you tried it? I feel like that would just be a blister fest.
I just ordered a pair of Free's. After seeing this and Chris raving over them, I wish they would hurry and arrive already!
I'm curious too... do you know what it is about being sockless that seems better?
As far as the socks go, I think there are a couple things that make it work for me:
1. The liner is pretty soft. I just compared it to a couple of my regular trainers, and there's a definite difference in the type of lining material. I believe I read somewhere that they were designed to be worn without socks even. Probably why they chose the liner they chose.
2. I wasn't entirely sure what size to order. Stuff I found online recommended anything from your normal shoe size to 3 sizes bigger. I decided to just go with my normal size and return them if necessary. Lengthwise, they're perfect. However, there was some tightness around the mid part of my foot. Nothing too alarming, but enough that removing the extra layer of socks really makes a difference.
All-in-all, I don't know, they just seem so much more comfortable to me without socks. Almost like they're meshing with my foot more. Obviously different feet will fit them differently, so your results may vary.
My husband tried on the Nike Free 3.0 and 5.0 and his main complaint was the tightness in the middle, just like you described. Maybe I should convince him to reconsider them and try using them sockless. Thanks for that feedback!
So glad to see that the shoes are working out for you. That's great! I can identify with your training weight gain and now loss. I gained three pounds with each marathon I trained for. Now that I'm not training for one, I've lost 3. Only 6 more to go to get back to where I started.
