Why can't they blow the BP well shut using controlled demolition techniques at depths 1000 ft below sea floor?
It seems to me that geologists could figure out a way that 2 - 3 strategically placed explosive charges 50 - 100 feet away from the well head drilled at a depth of 500' to 1000' below the sea floor surface would cause an implosion that would allow the sea floor to collapse on the hole and permanently seal the well. Even with a porous substrate at that depth the pressure would be more than enough to seal this thing, right?
No. Oil is flowing out right now with a pressure of about 30,000 psi through an opening which causes it to have about 46 million newtons of "thrust" pointed up. Blowing holes in things only blows holes in things. Where is this rock going to come from that's going to implode and plug the hole? Nowhere, because it's already there. You'd just fracture the rock further, perhaps leading to additional leaks that we would have to contend with.
Further, at the moment, the busted well-head is our last human piece of machinery down there that we can use our human ingenuity to try things with. By detonating those subterranean bombs (which would of course require careful drilling to get them there in the first place), you would destroy the well, leaving nothing but a raw hole for oil to gush out of.
Do a Newton's 2nd Law on that bad boy, and it turns out that you need a *minimum* 5,200 tons (short) to close the hole with mass alone. This is equivalent to *seventy-seven* of the US Army's front-line M-1A2 Abrams heavy main battle tanks completely outfitted for combat. And you'd have to stack them all at the same time, otherwise they'd just be blown off, piecemeal.
This is why it's so difficult, and "implosion" is not the answer.
For the life if me, I don't know why people keep coming up with using explosives, all the way up to strategic nuclear weapons, to solve the problem. It's like a knee-jerk science-fiction reaction or something. Explosives are used to put out oil well fires on land by momentarily depriving them of oxygen. They do not blow the well-head apart to fix the problem.
