How do you test the strength of plastic?
For my product study in design technology at college I have to design and make a 'test rig' to test the strength and durability of plastic.
What's the best way to do this?
My product is screwdrivers, it's going to have a plastic handle.. what are some suitable plastics to test?
For a scredriver handle, I would think that some of the more important characteristics would be impact strength, stiffness and abrasion restance. If you were doing this for a real product and company, you would have real equipment to test all of these.
If you need to come-up with a simple way to test these properties, you could rig a few things to measure the sample properties. Stiffness could be measured by using a two point bend or deflection under a certain load. You just make bars of each material to the same dimension and suspend between two points. You then apply different loads to the center and measure the amount of deflection. Impact strength could be done in a similar way except you apply an increasing heavier load at a fast rate until you see differences in how they break. Abrasion is pretty easy to do except you just have to make sure that your have a way to consistently apply the abrasion. Results would be more visual.
As for which types of plastic to try, you could would go with maybe a couple different types of nylon, high density polyethylene, PVC, polycarbonate and a cured urethane or epoxy.
