What is Pilates?
Pilatesfocuses on increasing strength, flexibility and body awareness without bulking up. Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. He was a physical trainer and created this form of exercise for rehabilitation purposes. His method was uses by war veterans and dancers including George Balanchine and Martha Graham. Over the years the basic tenants of the Pilates method has been preserved.
Pilates New York focuses on increasing strength, flexibility and body awareness without bulking up. Controlled movements are at the base of a Pilate's routine. Spring-resistant exercise equipment is specially designed for use and includes the Cadillac, Reformer, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector and Wunda Chair. Also mats and balls are used in this non aerobic form of exercise. Considered a resistant exercise those out of condition will notice an increase in their heart weight.
Spinal alignment and core muscle strength are the two key elements in Pilates New York. The muscles of the abdomen, hips, pelvis and spine loosely define your core muscle group. During a Pilate's session the instructor will get you to focus and concentrate on your core muscles. Breathing and muscle contraction are also key factors of your routine. Contrology is what Joseph Pilates called the coordination of the body, mind and spirit in his book, Pilates' Return to Life Through Contrology published in 1945. Pilates New York incorporates these principals in their Pilates programs.

How long before I see results!?
If I do Pilates for 45 minutes 5 times a week and 30 minutes of fast jogging at 5mph 4 times a week and eat a 1200 calorie diet of mostly fruits and vegetables and non-fat dairy, when will I start to see results? I am already thin, but I really need to tone up because I am out of shape and flabby. I'm 21 years old, 5'4" and about 116. How long before I start to really notice that my butt and thighs are shaping up???
Well like all of us we want to see results NOW....but that is not possible. Usually you start to notice the results in about 3-4 weeks. Talk to a nutritionist and see what they say about the diet part of it. Sometimes your body needs more or less of something when working out. Meaning that even though you are eating low calorie your body might be holding on to storage of fat because it thinks you are starving it. Check with a nutritionist or your doctor. Good luck!
