Are thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) yoga mats a more environmental choice than PVC?
I purchased a mat made from "TPE" and was told that it is the "environmental choice". However, I believe that this is still an oil/chemical based product, and by no means "natural" in any way. Apparently it is recyclable, but I think that 99% of purchasors will simply throw it in the trash when it's finished with, rather than melt and re-shape it into something else. Our local recycling center will not accept this product at this time.
So, is it the "eco" choice for yoga mats, or was I suckered by the marketing?
yeah according to this site, the reason for using TPE is that they are easily recycled. you should check again to make sure the recycling plant doesn't take them. you'll have to first find out what kind of polymer is being used. your best shot is to call back the store that sold you them and see how they recycle their own personal mats and if they personally don't own them, then, yeah, you got hosed.
