What are the symptoms causes and treatments available for Bruised bars (mouth) for a horse. What is a curb?
i am training to do my bhs stage 2 with horses and i was wondering if anyone colud tell me the symptoms, causes and treatments of Bruised bars(mouth) and what a curb is please!
Bruised bars are caused by poor training and handling. The horse resents the bit and is poorly schooled so pulls; and the rider uses their hands too much to try to control the horse.
The symptoms can be as severe as cuts on the bars that require veterinary attention, or simply a sore mouth and resentment/avoidance of the bit when being tacked up and ridden. The bars will feel hot to the touch.
Both horse and rider may need to be re-schooled. The horse needs to learn to balance, collect, and be under control; to slow and halt when asked; and the rider needs to learn to use their seat to collect their horse and control the paces, not their hands.
Failure to deal with the problem will result in a horse with a hard mouth, and a rider that goes on to ruin further animals.
Horses that have bolted and been pulled up hard by a panicking rider may also have bruised bars as the result of one incident. I always prefer to bombproof train any horse I work with, and also train them basic verbal commands starting with "whoa" for an emergency stop! Adults often look down their nose at 'Handy pony' style activities and don't consider it training, but a horse that can tolerate the hosepipe, loud noises and flapping bin liners is much safer to handle and ride; especially if you want to hack in traffic.
If its a one off and there are no open wounds the only treatment needed is bathing with a cool solution of salt water, a teaspoon in a pint. Wait until any cuts are healed, use a hackamore in the meantime if the horse if trained to use one. Switch to a rubber bit for a while when he's ready to return to work - of course, a horse thats prone to take hold of the bit and bolt isn't suitable for a hackamore or rubber bit.
A curb in this context refers to a bit that has a chain that passes underneath the horses chin. It's attatched to the bit. Pressure on the bit causes pressure on the chin groove, and this makes the horse tuck his nose in; this shouldn't be mistaken for teaching your horse to collect. A picture is easier to understand than a description in this case, look for different types of bit on the web.
Good luck with your exam!
